What is a “Competence Center”?

The PDF Association started in 2006 as the “PDF/A Competence Center”. The mission was to identify – and thereby establish – a common interpretation of the PDF/A-1 specification. With that accomplished through meetings open to all members, the secondary …

“PDF can do THAT?!”

PDF files deliver a complete package of information that defines a document; everything that’s needed to represent the text, graphics and layout that the recipient receives. To most people, PDF is “electronic paper” – the digital expression of a cellul …

The only digital document format

What is a “document”? A document is a record of some (typically written) content – a publication, a contract, a statement, a painting – at a moment in time. Until the advent of computers (and scanners), the media typically considered useable for such r …

The Power of the Page

It’s a question that vexes vendors of web-based solutions everywhere: why do people still insist on PDF files? And why does PDF’s mindshare keep going up? “PDF is such antediluvian technology!” they say. “It’s pre-web, are you kidding me? It’s so old-f …

The complete family of PDF standards at CeBIT 2013

Berlin/Hannover. In the world of bits and bytes, PDF standards play a vital role when discussing document formats. This will be reflected at CeBIT 2013, from the 5th to the 9th of March. In Hall 3, members of the PDF Association will discuss the PDF standards family: the basics, new developments and potential uses. In particular, these experts will focus on the PDF/A-3 standard – which was approved by the ISO last autumn – and its huge potential for many applications, including e-invoicing.

The Forum Electronic Billing Germany (FeRD, Forum elektronische Rechnung Deutschland) recommends PDF/A-3 as a transfer format in its Central User Guidelines for Electronic Billing in Germany (ZUGFeRD). This is because of the significant advantages that PDF/A-3 brings: a single file contains both a human-readable version of an invoice and the raw data for digital processing. If required, the XML data elements can be digitally extracted and automatically processed. The invoice’s recipient can also process the file as they would a perfectly normal PDF, printing it out or displaying it on-screen. In addition, PDF/A has been standardised by the ISO in order to produce unalterable, archivable PDF files. PDF Association board members Carsten Heiermann and Bernd Wild in particular will be able to provide more detailed information on this subject. As collaborative partners in FeRD, they represent the international Association and use their specialist knowledge to help develop this all-purpose file format for e-invoicing.

CeBIT visitors will find one of a number of interesting events in the ECM Forum hosted by BITKOM and VOI on the 6th of March. From 11:00 until 11:30am, the Forum will host a podium discussion on the subject of ZUGFeRD.

The PDF Association will also provide a valuable point of contact to answer questions about other PDF standards. Director Thomas Zellmann will provide an overview of the subject in the ECM Forum on the 7th of March, from 1:00 until 1:30pm, with the title “PDF/A – 1, 2 and now version 3 already?!” He will discuss the differences between and potential uses for the different standards, and advise on how businesses can further optimise their IT-based processes.

For the most recent developments, the PDF Association’s experts will provide a “pack” containing everything worth knowing about the newest PDF standard, PDF/UA. This version, which was published last summer by the ISO, defines a framework for recognising a PDF document as universally accessible and making these kinds of PDF documents available. This means that for the first time, everyone along the production chain can receive clear guidance, whether developing software for creating PDFs or for viewing them.

For all information about PDF/A at a glance, decision-makers need look no further than the new edition of PDF/A in a nutshell. Members of the PDF Association will hand out this free, comprehensive information brochure to any interested visitors to their stands. Over 15 pages, the experts will offer their knowledge about the ISO-standard for long-term archiving, in compact form – including the history of the format, its application scope, creation tools and potential uses. The brochure also contains a fact-checker examining myths and legends about PDF/A, as well as an overview of the other PDF standards available.
