July 13, 2010 (Berlin, Woerden) – After North America and Italy, the PDF/A Competence Center is now represented by its own local chapter in the Benelux countries. At the recent founding meeting in Woerden in the Netherlands, Dominique Hermans of DO Consultancy was elected as head of the group and Frank Rem of Tall Components as his deputy.
The Benelux chapter is part of the strategy of the internationally active PDF/A Competence Center to establish the ISO standard PDF/A for long-term archiving further in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. With this in mind, the organization held a member meeting on July 8, 2010 in Woerden to get the new chapter started. The eleven companies represented at the meeting included the German firms callas software and LuraTech Europe. Others present were Adobe, DO Consultancy, Document Dialog, DSM, Four Pees, Holland Ridderkerk, Livnara, and Tall Components.
The first joint action planned by the chapter is a PDF/A seminar on December 2 in Woerden, which DO Consultancy will organize together with the PDF/A Competence Center.
The ISO 19005 standard (PDF/A) defines requirements for creating documents suitable for archiving based on the widely available PDF format. The standard specifies in detail what content is allowed and what is not. These and other specifications are intended to ensure long-term readability of the documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. The advantages of PDF/A such as full-text search capabilities have led it to already replace TIFF as the preferred archiving format in numerous international governmental organizations as well as in private industries.
