Last month was the first anniversary of the publication of the PDF/VT specification by the International Standards Organization (ISO 16612-2), and it has been a very busy first year. So it is a good time to recap the latest news, and also to review some of the history. Also, the Printing Industries of America (PIA) honored PDF/VT with the “InterTech Technology Award for Innovative Excellence”. Learn how PDF/VT earned the award. [...]

The combination of instructive product demonstrations and practical presentations on PDF/A found considerable resonance among professional attendees at the DMS Expo. Interest in PDF/A was equally high in all areas of application, such as scanning and capture applications, output management or integration in an ECM system. Visitors at the DMS EXPO also learned about impending advances, particularly the PDF/A-2 part of the standard to be published next year. It enables new PDF functions such as JPEG2000 compression, layers and entire folder structures to be included in archiving. PDF/A-2 also supports new comment functions as well as transparency effects. [...]
Integrated handling of the large number of PDF standards in DMS and ECM environments will be an important focus for the PDF/A Competence Center. This year, the PDF/A Competence Center is also taking a wider view, because in the meantime a whole range of ISO standards have developed for PDF. This will be discussed from an integrated perspective along with their use in DMS/ECM environments. [...]
Topics include the DMS Expo, accessibility in PDF and a recap of the 4th International PDF/A Conference.
The PDF/A Conference showed that PDF/A is emerging across Europe – and elsewhere in the world – as the leading standard. There are still many challenges ahead in bringing PDF/A to every region of Europe and North America, and the group has yet to make inroads in Asia Pacific. In the UK, for example, we are still in the early stages of educating government offices and companies as to the existence of PDF/A as the archiving standard. In addition to growth in geographic breadth, there is a further challenge to increase the depth of PDF/A adoption. Do you work with PDF? We’d love your help.

Topics include the DMS Expo and ArchiSafe’s BSI Protection Profile. Also, those who adhere to the PDF/A standard when archiving electronic documents avoid the risk of important information not being accessible in a few years. In order that an electronic document can be presented before a court, should the need arise, it must be electronically signed. A qualified electronic signature (QES) ensures the admissibility of an electronic document as evidence in a court of law in all European countries. The combination of PDF/A and QES therefore stands for legally binding and evidential long-term archiving. In order that this status remains valid for an “infinite” period of time, the signature should be renewed on a regular basis. [...]
