The PDF/A Competence Centers technical working group has released the Isartor test suite, which can validate the quality of PDF/A files. It contains over 200 files which systematically violate all the requirements for PDF/A-1b. This enables users and software providers to determine whether a PDF/A validator actually tests all the rules for PDF/A-1b.
Seminar participants will spend half a day learning all they need to know about the ISO standard for long-term archiving, its areas of application and advantages. The introductory lecture will be held by Bernhard Zoeller, a well-known ECM expert and CEO of Zoeller & Partner. Afterwards, noted specialists and members of the PDF/A Competence Center will speak on a variety of topics covering many aspects of PDF/A. They will explain, for example, how metadata and electronic signatures are used in PDF/A documents. Other topics include the conversion of paper-based and electronic documents including e-mail messages to PDF/A.
Topics include a pre-DMS Seminar at the DMS Expo 2008 and PDF/A in mass-output. The seminar has been organized by the members of the executive committee and offers PDF/A knowledge in a concentrated form – a 4 hour compact seminar with some of the most prominent PDF/A experts and an excellent warm-up to one of the main themes of the fair. Fifteen members of the PDF/A Competence Center will present their products and services involving the PDF/A format and answer questions for visitors to the DMS Expo 2008. On September 8, 2008 – the day before the DMS EXPO – the PDF/A Competence Center will also offer a half-day seminar in Cologne. It will provide participants with detailed information on the ISO standard for long-term archiving as well as its advantages and areas of use. Will you attend?

Microsoft Office 2007 will support PDF/A the ISO standard for long-term archiving in PDF format. Users of the Office suite will be able to create PDF/A files directly from the applications. In this way the files will remain readable for years to come, without requiring that obsolete versions of applications remain available. Don’t you see this decision by Microsoft as confirming that PDF/A will gain even further acceptance?

Thanks to the increasingly efficient and productive equipment for digital and digitally controlled communications, more documents are being produced and distributed today than ever before. During a quiet moment one might contemplate the question: how will the technology that is currently lighting up our eyes be viewed in 10 or 20 years? Will todays technology be as attractive in the future as a WordStar or Lotus 123 file on a floppy disk is today?
