Since then the marketplace has shifted; it’s no longer clear that Adobe drivesPDF feature support worldwide. Accordingly, we are happy to report that adoption of PDF 2.0 continues apace, with new vendors announcing their support every month.
Berlin. The PDF Association will hold a seminar on the subject of archiving with PDF/A on the 12th of June 2012 in Frankfurt am Main. Here, users and decision-makers will discover the latest on how to archive documents with PDF. They will learn in detail about the format, its standards and varying conformance levels, work through tutorials, and pick up tips for successfully implementing projects. The intended audience includes technical specialists, project managers and executives from the administrative and IT departments of businesses and public bodies, as well as business consultants, software houses and systems integrators.
PDF/A has now become peoples archiving format of choice. As a long-term archiving standard, it guarantees reliable reproduction of documents many years from now, whatever technological innovations may happen in hardware or software. PDF/A allows for the creation of a standardised archiving field where both scanned and born digital documents can be preserved.
Spoiled for choice
In the meantime, there are two ISO-certified PDF/A standards and the third is on the verge of publication. On top of that, there are many different conformance levels, such as PDF/A-1a, PDF/A-2b and PDF/A-2u. Documents are now archived using PDF/A paper-based or born digital, for ten years or one hundred or forever, says Carsten Heiermann, member of the PDF Association board. But few realise yet just how much is possible with PDF/A. There are also the many different characteristics of each format to consider; it is important to get competent advice on the matter. We hope to fully close these knowledge gaps at our event.
The event is intended to bring participants up to speed quickly and concisely on the current state of knowledge regarding PDF/A in its various forms. Demonstrating by example, speakers will also show how to make full use of the PDF/A ISO standards potential.
The seminars content is divided up into five sections: basic principles, guidance, implementation, evaluation and future prospects.
First, the seminar will give a brief introduction to the PDF/A format and explain the differences between the individual standards. The speakers will then discuss how best to integrate PDF/A archiving into the life cycle of a document. Specific examples of usage will also demonstrate how PDF/A can be used in different ways. In another presentation, participants will discover which criteria they should use when deciding whether or not to archive with PDF/A and how to realistically assess the amount of work required for a project. Finally, the PDF Association will take a look at the coming third standard, which opens new and intriguing possibilities for applications thanks to its ability to embed all kinds of files into a PDF/A file. PDF/A-3 will make it possible to embed original data such as XML, CAD and others into PDF/A as complete archived objects. One practical example would be the German register of births, marriages and deaths, where both signed XML data and a PDF/A document need to be archived based on (for example) a birth certificate.

ISO 19005 (PDF/A) defines requirements to suitably archive documents using the popular PDF format. The International Standard for archive-ready PDF provides specifications that ensure the long-term readability and full-text search functionality of documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. The advantages of PDF/A are such that only five years after ratification, the standard has already replaced TIFF as the preferred archiving format in numerous international government organizations and industries. The PDF/A Competence Center is the central point of contact within the PDF Association for the PDF/A format. In Autumn 2011, the PDF Association emerged from the PDF/A Competence Center, which was originally founded in 2006. The PDF/A Competence Center is the first and currently the largest division of the PDF Association.
