Ulrich IsermeyerPDF Association: At the PDF Days Europe, you will be hosting a presentation titled “The power of 3D PDF” – what’s that about?

Ulrich Isermeyer: 3D PDF is not just another 3D Format, it is a PDF Document, which can be used by everybody, without any costs. This presentation will give an overview about the technical concept of 3D PDF and use cases in the industry.
As it is possible to connect 3D Models with the help of Javascript to PDF forms, text or any other PDF content, the use cases are endless and the ROI of this technology is huge. As you can access to the complete 3D Model inside the PDF, you can do almost anything.

The 3D Model inside the PDF is not only a 3D Model, which you can turn and zoom. It is much more. If you create a precise highly compressed B-REP Model or embed an imprecise Face-model with U3D depends from the use case and the security considerations of the Customer. If you allow everything through security settings, you have access to animations, assembly tree parts, PMI Data, Metadata, Materials, views, comments and 3D annotations.

3D PDF exists since 2004, but since PDF 2.0, PRC is also part of the ISO specification. As PRC can handle Model Based Definition (MBD) and Model Based Enterprise (MBE), some examples and technical concepts of PRC are shown. PRC is also part of PDF/E 2 and might be integrated into the forthcoming PDF/A-4 specification. The presentation will handle the history, the current status and future plans in terms of the ISO Standards.

PDF Association: Who is your presentation aimed at?

Ulrich Isermeyer: The presentation is aimed to interested customers in the manufacturing or AEC industry, who might consider to use 3D PDF in their existing workflows from product development, manufacturing to maintenance/support or technical documentation or where CAD Data usage is simply not applicable or affordable. Also 3D PDF can use existing 3D Models in Sales and Marketing Materials, which can be used by everybody, as this works in every free Acrobat Reader.
Also this is addressed to Software developers, who might consider to invest into this area in the future, as this opens up new areas in the Manufacturing and AEC Industry for PDF. PRC is part of the new PDF 2.0 and PDF/E2 specification and can also be used for long term 3D data archiving.

PDF Association: What will the people who attend your presentation be able to take away from it?

Ulrich Isermeyer: Next to the 3D PDF and PRC format itself and the concept behind it, attendees will learn about the endless use case and the power of 3D inside a document. Also the audience will learn about the ISO standardization part of the format.
