My hospital emailed me a medical records release form as a PDF. They told me to print it, fill it, sign it, scan it and return it to the medical records department, in that order. In 2018? To get the form via email (i.e., electronically), yet be asked to print it? Did the last 20 years just… not mean anything! So I thought I’d be clever. I’d fill it first, THEN print it. Or better yet, never print it, but sign it anyhow, and return it along with a note making the case for improving their workflow. The story continues…Slides and video recordings of PDF Days Europe 2018

Catherine Andersz of PDFTron Systems, Alaine Behler of iText Software and Peter Wyatt, ISO Project Leader for ISO 32000 enrich the newly elected board of the PDF Association.
November 21, 2006 (Berlin) – The PDF/A Competence Center welcomes Adobe Systems as a new member. “We have succeeded in recruiting the inventor of PDF and co-initiator of the new ISO standard PDF/A for our association,” announced Thomas Zellmann, executive chairman of the PDF/A Competence Center, with great satisfaction.
“We have monitored the activities of the association since its inception and are pleased by its dynamics,” stated Ulrich Isermeyer, Business Development Manager of Adobe Systems GmbH. “For us the PDF/A Competence Center represents an outstanding platform for promoting the topic more effectively.”
The members of the PDF/A Competence Centers are focused on both technical as well as conceptual aspects. They contribute actively to the advancement of the PDF/A standard and have representatives on the International Standards Organisation (ISO) committee. The products of the members are mutually tested to ensure high technical quality. At the same time, the PDF/A Competence Center has made its mission to serve as a platform for the exchange of experience and information on the new ISO standard. In pursuit of this mission it holds international seminars on the topic and provides comprehensive information on its Internet site.
PDF/A is the ISO 19005 standard for long-term archiving of electronic documents. It represents a restricted variant of PDF and creates a standardized profile for using PDF in long-term archiving. The standard specifies in detail which content and elements are allowed and which are not. The specification is intended to ensure long-term readability of documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. Experts predict that the designation of PDF/A as an ISO standard will promote the popularity of that format, and advantages such as full text search capabilities will lead to it replacing TIFF in the near future.
