Court Improperly Redacts PDF in Apple Case
For at least the third time this year, poor redaction practices have leaked sensitive information to the public. Apple see itself as the latest victim, this time because a California judge improperly redacted files in Apple’s copyright infringement lawsuit with Samsung. According to Atlantic Wire’s Adam Clark Estes, “U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh … attempted to redact nearly two dozen sentences or short fragments. But because of a formatting characteristic in the prior electronic version, the redacted material can be viewed by copying text from the PDF and pasting it into another document.” [...]

3D PDF Technology Receives Patent
UK-based Visual Technology Services says it has received a patent for its PDF3D Compression Technology called “Triangle Mesh Compression”.The GB2477368 patent covers “proprietary methods used to compress large terrain grids, typical of digital elevation maps, bathymetric survey data, in a 3D triangle mesh surface packaged within a standard PDF file, such that the resulting document is up to 60% smaller and more efficient to communicate, while enabling the recipient to open and review the 3D model with rotation, pan, zoom, location probe, fly-through interaction.” [...]

Google has announced that PDF export functionality will be part of its soon-to-be-released analytics interface. New Trojan Masquerades as PDF
Once again there is a Trojan, software that pretends to be something else that installs a backdoor into a computer system, masquerading as a PDF file. This one poses as a message from the United States Postal Service (USPS), according to Sunbelt/GFI Labs. The company warns that “once downloaded onto a system, there are “a lot of potential actions this malware might do, like downloading other binaries/components onto the infected system, updating a copy of itself, posting information to these sites, or waiting for commands from its controller. As of this writing, the file does not download other binaries or additional component files.” [...]
Adobe Restructures, Increases Focus on Digital Media and Marketing Products
Adobe Systems will layoff 750 employees, about 8 percent of its workforce, in North America and Europe as part of a restructuring plan designed to accelerate growth. The company says it wants to “grow its analytics and reporting business, especially on mobile devices and social networks,” according to an article from PC World. “In order to drive increased Digital Marketing bookings, which are recognized as recurring revenue, the company will reduce its investment, and expected license revenue, in certain enterprise solution product lines.” Specifics on which enterprise products would be affected, or how they would be affected, have not been released yet. New Safari Browser Beta Fixes Inline PDF Issues
Safari 5.1.2 seed for developers will correct inline PDF issues common to Mac and Windows PC users. Techno Buffalo’s Killian Bell says Apple is asking developers to test the latest beta release and report any remaining bugs so that they can be fixed before the software’s public release. “Safari 5.1.2 fixes issues where PDFs in frames were not displayed in the browser,” he says. “Please test this build with websites that display PDF documents inline such as banks and document management systems.
