Berlin, 17. September 2012. This year, visitors to the DMS EXPO will once again find a comprehensive range of information about the PDF/A standard for quality-controlling and archiving electronic documents. Part 2 (PDF/A-2), published last year, is already a key component in many long-term archiving projects. Very soon, PDF/A-3 will be published by the ISO. At the DMS EXPO, PDF Association members will give a number of speeches and presentations to demonstrate what these different parts of PDF/A mean and their potential uses. They will also be available to answer questions about PDF/A at their stands around the show.
The DMS EXPO, the leading trade show for enterprise content management, will take place in Stuttgart from the 23rd to the 25th of October 2012.
This year’s DMS EXPO and IT & Business trade shows share the slogan, “Where IT works”. Visitors to the double show will discover how to further automate and optimise their IT-based processes. The right choice of document format forms a basis here for increasing the efficiency of associated processes and business departments. “For example, businesses that hold their archives in PDF/A format can access their documents much more easily,” said Thomas Zellmann, Managing Director of the PDF Association. “And the second and soon-to-be-published third parts of PDF/A provide additional options which will have an immediate effect on business processes.” For example, PDF/A-2 allows so-called “containers”, which means users can bring multiple PDF/A documents together into a single electronic portfolio – a PDF Collection. PDF/A-3 goes a step further, allowing you to contain files of any type into a PDF/A file. This means, for example, that original data such as XML and CAD files (among others) can be embedded within a PDF/A file and archived as a single, complete item. A practical example of this would be the German official register of births, marriages and deaths, where signed XML files need to be archived as machine-readable master versions, along with a visual PDF/A document – for a birth certificate, for example.
PDF/A-related presentations will be on offer on all three days of the DMS EXPO in the VOI Forum (Hall 5, Stand A53). On the 23rd of October at 3:30pm, visitors can get an overview and an introduction to the different parts of PDF/A, titled “PDF/A – 1, 2, and now 3 already?!”. On the 24th of October at 2:30pm, a presentation will discuss the challenges involved during mass server-side conversion of a range of source formats to PDF/A. And on the 25th of October from 11:00am onwards, the focus will be on email archiving with PDF/A.
In addition, a set of three PDF/A presentations will be held in the BITKOM Forum at 12:00. The first will discuss new ways of using metadata with PDF/A. At 1:00pm, it will be time to prove how PDF/A improves the quality of files in ECM environments. A presentation titled “Hybrid archiving with PDF/A” will complete the programme of information on offer at the DMS EXPO.
