Members will offer comprehensive information on the applications of various International Standards for PDF, including PDF/A for archiving and PDF/VT for variable data and transactional printing.
July 14, 2011 (Berlin) – At the DMS EXPO, September 20-22, 2011, PDF/A Competence Center members will be available to share information about the complete family of PDF standards and how they contribute to a holistic approach for enterprise content, output and document management.
The PDF/A Competence Center is a cooperation partner of the VOI – Verband Organisations. At the main level of the VOI (Hall 7, Stand B 51), Competence Center members Adobe Systems, callas software, intarsys and LuraTech Europe will answer questions and provide additional information on PDF Standards, in particular, PDF/A.
The PDF/A format is now the preferred archival format for many organizations and governments around the world. More and more companies and agencies are taking advantage of PDF/A benefits, including layout fidelity and full text search capability. In June, PDF/A-2 was published by the International Standards Organization, making a number of important new features available, including support for JPEG 2000, transparencies, layers and embedded PDF/A files.
The PDF/A Competence Center would also like to introduce DMS Expo attendees to another PDF Standard: PDF/VT, in which V stands for variable data printing and T for transactional printing. The PDF/A Competence Center initially became interested in PDF/VT in 2010 and organized a Special Interest Group. The Chairman of that Working Group, Mark Lewiecki of Adobe Systems and Stewart Rogers of Crawford Technologies will provide a balanced consideration of both the production and processing benefits of PDF/VT. PDF/VT-X has been used for a decade in the printing industry and adds features that are indispensable in output management.
The PDF/A Competence Center will offer a half-day seminar the day before the DMS EXPO to provide a few insights into PDF/VT. The presentations and subsequent panel discussion will include both technical and practical aspects of the PDF/VT format and its concrete implementation. The discussion will also cover the potential synergies for archiving with PDF/A and with respect to accessibility, the PDF/UA standard expected for publication in 2012. Seminar participation costs 199 €, but is free for members of the PDF/A Competence Center.
The DMS EXPO will be held simultaneously with the IT & Business Trade Fair for software, infrastructure and IT services. Visitors to either conference can attend both events with one admittance.
ISO 19005 (PDF/A) defines requirements for documents suitable for archiving using the popular and ubiquitous PDF format. The International Standard for archive-ready PDF provides requirements and specifications that ensure the long-term readability and full-text search functionality of documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. The advantages of PDF/A are such that only 5 years after ratification the Standard has already replaced TIFF as the preferred archiving format in numerous international governmental organizations and industries.
