PDF/A Competence Center at the DMS EXPO 2008

Record results and a new management board member.

September 17, 2008 (Berlin) – The PDF/A Competence Center is satisfied in all respects with the developments at this year’s DMS EXPO. A well-attended seminar the day before the trade show, a full house during the forum and numerous discussions at the shared stand showed the high level of interest in PDF/A. In addition, the association held elections for its management board, which was expanded to seven members with the addition of Johannes Hesel from SEAL Systems AG. Harald Grumser of Compart Systemhaus GmbH was elected as the new executive chairman of the management board. The previous executive chairman, Thomas Zellmann, remains on the board.

This year, the PDF/A Competence Center appeared at the DMS EXPO with a shared stand for the second time, with even better results than last year in every respect. The PDF/A seminar held the day before the trade show was well attended. During the half-day event in a quiet atmosphere, participants learned all they needed to know about the ISO standard for long-term archiving, its areas of application and advantages. The daily forum during the trade show was also well attended on each of the three days. The presentations covered such topics as the differences between PDF/A and other formats, archiving strategies, the specific use of PDF/A with document management and archiving systems, and digital inbox / outgoing mail solutions. Moreover, the exhibitors at the shared stand – Adobe Systems, callas software, Cartago Software, Compart Systemhaus, DETEC Decision Technology, Global Graphics, icon Systemhaus, intarsys, Janich & Klass, LRS Levi, Ray & Shoup, LuraTech Europe, PDFlib, PDF Tools and SEAL Systems – were more than satisfied with the many discussions and numerous new contacts.

Harald Grumser, the newly elected executive chairman of the PDF/A Competence Center management board, summarized the event as follows: “We are very pleased with the increased numbers of exhibitors and visitors at our shared stand. It is also good to see that PDF/A is no longer spoken of as hype; instead, the discussions focused on specific solutions and projects in which PDF/A plays a role.”

The association and its members have only a little time to rest before the next event. On October 7-8, 2008 the PDF/A Competence Center will be represented for the first time at FAN – Forum des Acteurs du Numérique in Paris with a shared stand. Association members ABBYY, Adobe, callas, Compart, intarsys, SEAL Systems and Spigraph will be presenting on all aspects of PDF/A. This is already the second joint trade show appearance of the PDF/A Competence Center in France this year following the participation at Documation in the spring, meaning he association will once again meet its international goal.

At the general meeting held before the DMS EXPO, Johannes Hesel of SEAL Systems AG was elected as the seventh member of the management board. Afterwards, the management board appointed Harald Grumser of Compart Systemhaus GmbH as its new executive chairman. He succeeds Thomas Zellmann of LuraTech Europe GmbH in this responsibility. Mr. Zellmann remains as a member of the PDF/A Competence Center management board. “We are very grateful to Thomas Zellmann for his successful work as executive chairman during the past two years,” said Mr. Grumser in appreciation.

About PDF/A
The ISO 19005 standard (PDF/A) defines requirements for creating documents suitable for archiving based on the widely available PDF format. The standard specifies in detail what content is allowed and what is not. These and other specifications are intended to ensure long-term readability of the documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. Experts predict that the designation of PDF/A as an ISO standard will promote the popularity of that format, and advantages such as full-text search capabilities will lead to it replacing TIFF in the near future.
