June 18, 2007 (Berlin) – ABBYY, a renowned company in the field of information acquisition, has become a member of the PDF/A Competence Center.
The international corporation develops and markets technologies for document recognition, document conversion, data capture and linguistics. ABBYY’s involvement with the PDF/A Competence Center emphasizes their commitment to the development and promotion of technology standards.
“With ABBYY, we have gained an important member for our association, contributing expertise in the acquisition and classification of data and information,” explained Thomas Zellmann, executive chairman of the PDF/A Competence Center. “ABBYY’s status as a leading global supplier helps underscore the international scope of the Competence Center.”
ABBYY, headquartered in Moscow with numerous subsidiaries, develops and markets its products worldwide. In addition to solutions for OCR and for converting PDF and other formats, they also provide data capture programs for processing forms, semi-structured, and unstructured documents.
“Our technology partners and customers value in particular the high recognition quality and flexibility of the ABBYY solutions,” said Jupp Stoepetie, managing director of ABBYY Europe. “Support for the PDF/A format is a logical extension of our solution portfolio.”
PDF/A is optimal for the long-term archiving of scanned and converted documents. This is playing an increasingly important role where ABBYY technologies are used with subsequent archiving. ABBYY is the second well-known supplier to join the PDF/A Competence Center from the field of information acquisition. Docutec AG, based in Aachen, Germany, recently became the first data extraction and classification specialist to become part of the association.
The ISO 19005 standard (PDF/A) defines requirements for creating documents suitable for archiving, based on the widely available PDF format. The standard specifies in detail what type of content is allowed and what is not. This and other specifications are intended to ensure the longterm readability of documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. Experts predict that the designation of PDF/A as an ISO standard will promote the popularity of the format, and advantages such as full text search
capabilities will lead to it replacing TIFF in the near future.
