The PDF/A Competence Center Introduced at CeBIT

January 25, 2007 (Hannover / Berlin) – For the first time, visitors to CeBIT this year have a central point of contact for information and available solutions regarding the ISO-standardized PDF/A format for long-term archiving.

The PDF/A Competence Center is represented with its own booth in Hall 1, Stand L 80. Here, a total of ten association members will present their products and service portfolios dealing with PDF/A. Interested parties will find numerous competent contacts to answer their questions. The exhibitors at the shared booth of the PDF/A Competence Center are: Actino Software, callas software, Compart Systemhaus, DETEC Decision Technology Software, intarsys consulting, LuraTech Europe, OPENLiMiT SignCubes, PDFlib, PDF Tools and SEAL Systems.

CeBIT will take place from March 15-21, 2007 in Hanover.

The new ISO standard PDF/A for long-term archiving is generating an increased demand for PDF/A-compliant products on the market. These include solutions which allow PDF/A files to be displayed, printed or produced from existing files or paper-based documents, or which can check the compliance of PDF/A files against the ISO-standard.

In order to meet the quickly growing worldwide demand for information on PDF/A, the PDF/A Competence Center offers international visitors a central point of contact in the designated DMS area of Hall 1. Interested attendees, and software providers wanting to integrate PDF/A in their products and services, can get competent first-hand answers here. The entire executive committee of the PDF/A Competence Center is available for discussions at the booth along with the comprehensive collective expertise of the companies represented. Adobe Systems, member of the PDF/A Competence Center, the inventor of PDF, and co-initiator of the new ISO standard PDF/A, is sponsoring the “Adobe Happy Hour” beginning at 5 pm on the days of the trade fair.

Thomas Zellmann, executive chairman of the PDF/A Competence Center, made the following statement on the significance of the new archiving format: “With PDF/A, all types of document can be archived for the longterm
in a state-of-the-art, standards-compliant format. This provides the cornerstone for a unification of archiving formats.”

About PDF/A
PDF/A is the ISO 19005 standard for long-term archiving in PDF format. It comprises a limited variant of PDF, a standard profile for using PDF in longterm archiving. The standard specifies in detail what type of content is
allowed and what is not. This and other specifications are intended to ensure the long-term readability of documents regardless of the application software and operating system in which they were originally produced. Experts predict that the designation of PDF/A as an ISO standard will promote the popularity of the format, and advantages such as full text search capabilities will lead to it replacing TIFF in the near future.
